Santa Ponsa

A town in the southwest of Mallorca. It belongs to the municipality of Calvia, one of the richest communities in Spain. With over 11,000 inhabitants, Santa Ponsa is the most populated town of Calvia. Strongly marketed, especially in the summer months by the European tourism and especially popular for British and Germans.

The distance to the island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca is only 20 kilometers and the airport is easy to reach via the motorway (Via de Cintura). From the port of Palma, there are daily ferry connections to mainland Spain and also to the neighboring islands of Ibiza and Menorca. There are several daily flights from the international airport connecting the island with all major european cities.

The town of Santa Ponsa is build around a beautiful bay, protected by cliffs. The wide sandy beach is located at the head of the bay. Many hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, souvenir shops can be found on both sides of the bay.

The Marina “Club Nautico Santa Ponsa” is a popular starting point for many water sports activities here in the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea. The travel portal “Trip Advisor” has voted Calvia to the top 10 destinations in Spain in 2014.

Santa Ponsa offers all shops for daily needs and also has a “business park Son Bugadelles” with shops for construction, remodeling and renovation. There is a traditional weekly market, which is very popular for locals and tourists.

The international restaurants do not only offer Spanish Mediterranean cuisine but also international especially Italian specialities, such as the long-established “Il Carpaccio”.

The infrastructure of the town is – due to the high number of residents – well developed. Close by you can find international schools, various multilingual medical centers, a multilingual information center of the municipality of Calvia. Public transport to neighboring places like Paguera, or even to Palma de Mallorca are further advantages of Santa Ponsa.

Leisure time:
Several golf courses can be found within a short range, each have their own charm and level of difficulty. There is the famous “Santa Ponsa Country Club”, which offers tennis, wellness, spa, restaurant.

All kind of water sports are available in the “Club Nautico of Santa Ponsa” and in the new luxury marina of Port Adriano, who was designed by the French Philippe Starck. Whether water skiing, diving, yachting, or pedal boating, mini-cruises to the neighboring ports, swimming in the clean blue sea: You have the choice. In 2014 the beaches of Santa Ponsa and the surrounding area were again awarded with the “Blue Flag” for cleanliness, ecology and quality.

Santa Ponsa is also a good starting point for hikes on well-maintained and marked trails in the beautiful nature of the South West of Mallorca. A path leads to the municipality of Calvia capital and to Capdella, to neighboring Paguera, or even to Puerto Portals. The “Serra de Tramuntana”, the mountain range in the west is recognized as a heritage site, here you experience unspoiled nature and Mediterranean flora and fauna.

History:
Near the village is the archaeological park of Puig de Sa Morisca, featuring ofancient settlement of the Talaiot culture. In the 13th century Santa Ponsa was venue a significant historic event. For many years there have been conquests and wars between the Moors and Christians. On September 10, 1229 King Jaime I of Aragon landed in the bay of Santa Ponsa near the present-day marina with his forces, and began to reconquer the island of Mallorca.

In the Middle Ages Santa Ponsa was an important strategic trading port. The urbanization of Santa Ponsa began in the early 20th century, but was interrupted by the Civil War. From 1970 the importance of tourism was recognized and hotels and apartment facilities were built. The growth of Santa Ponsa then proceeded quickly, but it was also determined to protect the nature. Many parks and green areas, strict building regulations and a coastline that may not be built-up are the result of an environmentally-responsible policy.

Environment:
In order to develop a new building area, the residential area “Nova Santa Ponsa” was developed in the south 20 years ago. In this exclusive residential area there were luxury detached villas and apartment complexes build. This part is particularly popular with the international audience, as holiday and residential homes or for investment. Close to Nova Santa Ponsa there is the marina of Port Adriano with its modern flair, chic boutiques, an art gallery, the 5-star hotel “Port Adriano” and first-class restaurants.
